Just last week, I bought almond milk for the first time. I had been wanting to but I just hadn’t taken the plunge since it is more expensive than cows milk. I only got a carton of vanilla and a carton of chocolate so I could see how the girls liked it. We had tried rice milk and coconut milk and they had refused to drink it. After they fell in love with it, I did too. And I knew we were going to run out of it quickly. Price wise, we’d be spending about $8 per gallon of almond milk- way out of our budget when they girls drink 3-4 gallons of milk per week. I did not want to completely get them off cows milk, but wanted something else that had nutritional value for them to drink since they don’t get juice. I decided that to stay in our budget, I’d give it a try making homemade almond milk! It’s not perfect yet, but it’s super easy and tastes great. I’m currently trying to figure out how to match the taste of the store bought. And once I do, I’ll update this!
How to Make Almond Milk at Home:
Step 1. Soak 1 cup of almonds overnight (10-12 hours) in 4 cups of water.
Step 2. Drain the water and rinse off the almonds.
Step 3. Add the almonds to your blender along with 4 cups of fresh water.
Step 4. Blend blend blend.
Step 5. Using cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer, pour the milk into a bowl. The strainer will catch the almond chunks so all that is in the bowl will be milk.
Step 6. Add a teaspoon of vanilla or cocoa powder and blend the milk again.
Step 7. Refrigerate and enjoy for up to 3-5 days!
So you’re not just making milk with the almonds, save the leftover “pulp” to use in muffins, cookies, granola bars or dry it out in the oven so you can make almond butter! This way, you’ll get more for your money! 🙂
I’d like to add that I doubled this so I could make some vanilla and some chocolate milk. For one recipe of 1 cup almonds and 4 cups water, you make one quart- the carton you get at the grocery store. You can double it and make a half gallon but it’s only good for a few days! We’ll be making smaller amounts so it all can be used instead of risking the possibility of throwing it out. 🙂 Another awesome thing, you can do this with coconut to make coconut milk and steel cut oats to make oat milk. You better believe I’ll be making those soon! 😉
