So you’ve just found that you’re pregnant with your first child, that’s incredible news – congratulations are in order! The chances are that you’re not only feeling excited about the prospect of becoming a momma, but also incredibly anxious. Being pregnant for the first time is scary, there’s no doubt about it – the worst part is not knowing what to expect. However, as long as you take the time to prepare properly for having a child, you’ve got nothing to worry about.
What it’s important to realize is that all moms-to-be are nervous about having their first baby. After all, it’s a big step – having a baby isn’t something to take lightly – so it’s normal to feel anxious about the changes that will come with it. However, there’s plenty of help and support out there to help make preparing for your new addition easier, so there’s no need to stress.
As a momma to three kids myself, I have plenty of wisdom to share when it comes to preparing for your new addition. So below I have put together a list of the ins and outs of getting ready to welcome your first child into the world.
Read up on what to expect from pregnancy
One of the most daunting parts about being pregnant for the first time is that you have no clue about what to expect. You might have heard rumors about what you can expect, but that doesn’t really give you a good understanding of what being pregnant is like. However, if you take the time to read up on pregnancy, birth and motherhood, and what’s involved in each, you should feel a little less anxious as you will know what to expect.
If you’re not sure what resources to do, there are plenty of fantastic pregnancy and motherhood books to choose from. One of the most popular ones is, of course, ‘What To Expect When You’re Expecting.’ If this isn’t for you, don’t worry, as there are plenty of other options to choose from. As well as reading books about pregnancy, parenting blogs can also be great resources, as you can get a more personal look at what pregnancy and motherhood is like.
Save as much money as you can
A lot of newly expectant mothers worry about money more than anything else, because they are concerned that they won’t be able to cope. Yes, babies can be expensive, there’s no doubt about that. They need toys, clothes, food, and lots of other things, meaning that they don’t come cheap. However, if you make an effort to budget effectively throughout your pregnancy and get into the habit of doing so, you shouldn’t struggle when it comes to coping financially with motherhood.
Especially when you take into account any benefits you are entitled to, such as maternity pay, for instance, you can make life easier for yourself. When it comes to understanding maternity leave, it can seem a little confusing, but it’s actually fairly straightforward. You get a set amount of time off of work that is paid; this can be leading up to the birth of your child or afterward, it’s up to you. Most moms take a month or so off before their baby is born then use the rest of their maternity leave afterward.
Write a list of all the essentials your new addition will need
When it comes to preparing for the arrival of your new addition, it’s important to ensure that you have everything that you will need to take care of them. Take the time to write a list of all the items that your little one will need, from clothing to a pram, and then set a budget for each item. That way you can ensure that you don’t end up overspending.
It’s easy to go a little crazy when it comes to what your new addition needs and spend too much money buying this and that. However, it’s a good idea to stick to just the essentials, to ensure that you don’t end up wasting money on items that you don’t need or won’t get plenty of use. If you’re unsure of what the essentials are, it’s a good idea to spend some time doing your research to make sure that you only get what you need.
Create a birth plan
If you’re yet to start thinking about the birth of your baby, now is the perfect time to get planning. While it’s important to create a birth plan detailing what you would like the birth of your baby to be like, it’s important to realize that it may not go exactly to plan. The priority is always to get the baby out safely, so sometimes birth plans can change, and it’s important to understand that. Even so, it’s still important to put together a birth plan.
Your birth plan should detail where you would like to give birth – you may have various options. Who you would like to be your birthing partner, and whether you plan on having a natural birth or whether you would like to have drugs to make things a little easier. Obviously, you’re entitled to change your mind once labor starts, so there’s no need to worry if you’re not sure about what type of birth you want, you just need to give the medical team an idea, that’s all. If you don’t know what you want, talk to your friends and relatives who have had babies, spend some time reading up online, and see what other people recommend. As a first-time mom, you can use all the help that you can get, so don’t be afraid to ask others what they think.
So there you have it, the ins and outs to having your first child. Being pregnant for the first time is always going to be scary, as you don’t know what to expect. Hopefully, however, the above tips and advice have made things a little less worrying and given you a better idea of how to prepare and what to expect.
